University of Oxford , royal academy of engineering research fellow

Brian studied Civil Engineering for his undergraduate degree at the National University of Ireland, Galway (NUIG). After a brief stint working in site investigation with Irish Drilling Ltd he returned to NUIG to pursue a PhD on the behaviour of pile groups. During his PhD he was awarded a competitive visiting scholarship by University of California, Berkeley to work within the Geo-Engineering research group. In 2014 he joined University of Oxford as a postdoctoral researcher in experimental geotechnics focused on industry-funded research projects and was subsequently promoted to departmental lecturer in geotechnical engineering in January 2017. He was recently awarded a Royal Academy of Engineering Research Fellowship entitled “intelligent real-time monitoring to inform underground construction processes”. His research aims to develop intelligent, automated methods for instrumenting, measuring and monitoring soil-structure interaction during construction, to provide real-time feedback to site engineers and to develop current design methods.
