Network Rail , principal engineer,
Mike Edwards is a Principal Engineer in Network Rail’s central Safety, Technical & Engineering Directorate (STE). His work focusses on portfolio level asset management of c.200k railway earthworks. This requires the acquisition, manipulation and exploitation of disparate data to gain insights into an ageing, heterogenous inventory and support strategic decisions. Recent initiatives Mike has led include the developments of parametric hazard indices, global stability appraisals and rainfall/soil moisture diagnostics. He plays a key role in designing the information systems that embed these outputs into Network Rail’s operational business, supported by policy, standards and assurance. Before joining STE, Mike undertook earthwork, bridge and station scheme design development in Network Rail’s in-house design group. This followed a structured series of rotations across Network Rail’s business units as part of its engineering graduate scheme. Mike read Civil, Structural & Environmental Engineering at the University of Cambridge and is a Chartered Engineer and Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers.
